We started the day with our annual Neighborhood Patriotic Parade to the park, where we then have a fund raising BBQ picnic. Our friend and neighbor Sabrina Hammer organizes it every year and comes up with a cause to raise money for. It's a really great tradition that we're happy to be a part of!
Then, we were so excited to host a big pool party that evening with some friends. We had bbq chicken and hot dogs and everyone brought a potluck dish to share. It was fabulous. We counted 36 people there. It was a lot of bodies in that pool! But it was fun to see people of all different ages enjoying the pool. To explain that obscene picture up there: in my e-mail inviting people to the party, we told everyone that we have a "no bikini" policy for our pool. Well, some of the guys decided to play a prank on me and wore their wives' bikini tops. It was hilarious, disturbing, but hilarious! :) Now we've got blackmail pictures for future use!!! We stayed up late to see the fireworks from Lodi Lake, and did our own sparklers in the backyard. The kids were scared at first to touch the "fire sticks" but they quickly got over it and had fun. It really was a great day, but unfortunately we did not realize that our kids had a nasty flu, and we spread it to everyone that came to the party. We felt so horrible. The flu part lasted about a week (high fevers, little eating, mild vomiting, A LOT of sleeping) and then it turned into a nasty cold and cough which lasted another week. We had to go to the doctor and get antibiotics for 2 of the kids because it turned into infections. So we were quarantined for 2 weeks of our summer. In fact, still not realizing how sick everyone was, we left for Santa Cruz with Nathan's family on the Monday after, but when everyone got sick and wasn't getting better, we left early and stayed low for the next week and a half. The kids got very antsy and bored after a while, and I think that's why they were sooooo ready to go back to school!
